Human Calculator
The Indian’s achievement has always been a sense of wonder: a post-colonial nation that was able to sustain democracy bloomed with most amazing talents and imprinted its footprints in the world with its success in almost every field.
Today, aside from these sports crowds, a 20-year-old Hyderabadi is appreciated by every Indian who clinched the first-ever gold for India as the fastest human calculator in the world.
The Mental Calculation World Championship at the Mind Sports Olympiad in London was on Independence Day and Neelakantha Bhanu Prakash, a maths undergraduate student from Delhi’s St Stephen’s College brought glory to the nation winning the competition.
The title once grabbed by one of the most famous and beloved mathematical genius Shakuntala Devi, Bhanu’s victory bagged that place and became the fastest human calculator in the world.
The competition was a virtual event where 30 competitors were present, in between the age group of 10 to 57 years, from 13 different countries as reported by TOI.
Bhanu Prakash participated primarily in the first edition of the competition that was held in 1998, and because of the pandemic, the last event was accomplished on a digital platform. Also, the jury was so amazed by the record time answers of Bhanu that they asked to resolve a few more extra questions.
From clenching the cricket World Cup trophy to Kabaddi champions to Mary Kom’s amazing comeback, India is blessed with talents. And now from most addressed games India is making headway in some lesser-known sports as well, and gradually boosting medal tallies at international events, India has come a long way.
Bhanu’s record-breaking win is also a tail to mark in history as he bid his win with more than 65 points. A fellow participant from Lebanese trailed behind by 65 points to bag the second position whereas, UAE competitor came third.
It’s time to rejoice for India. Because a record set by great Shakuntala Devi in history with the title ‘Human Calculator’ is also broken by a boy of India. A magical minded boy whose brain calculates equations not only quicker than the speed of a calculator but Math maestros like Scott Flansburg and Shakuntala Devi.
Bhanu holds 50 national and 4 international records. In 2016, he imprinted his name in the world of maths, by defeating Scott Flansburg to win the title of the fastest human calculator in the world, according to The Hindu.
The MSO accounts for one of the most prestigious international tournaments for games related to mental skill and mind sports. This is identical to any different Olympic game in the world of physical sports.
Bhanu Prakash intends to create “VISION Math” labs and reach out to teenagers with the magic of math. It’s the sad end of our society that three out of every four students who study in the schools of India have trouble in learning basic Mathematics. The phobia has created havoc and also demotivated numbers of kids from understanding mathematics.
Bhanu is dedicated to expand and thrive the importance of numeracy as an important skill just like any other at the global level.
Let’s wish for the champion who wishes to instill a sense of enjoyment when children learn mathematics. The old Indian Math Glory is yet survived because of such aspirants who work hard to make this dream a reality.
