10 Average Internet Speeds in the World
Have you ever imagined about downloading 100 movies of HD quality in just 1 second? It sound impossible and you may laugh at me.
But if I say in future it can be possible for us to download the entire Netflix directory in just 1 second. As we know no one can predict the future exactly, but we know two things: It’s going to be different, and it must be rooted in today’s world.
Researchers at University College London have set a new world record for the fastest internet in the world at 178 terabits per second. The project was under the supervision of Dr Lidia Galdino of Royal Academy of Engineering Researcher and the fellows of Xtera and Kiddi Research.

Now let’s talk about the infrastructure required for this project:
The bespoke system used a bandwidth of 16.8 terahertz (THz) in a single-fibre core, four times the 4.5 THz used by most of our current network infrastructure.
UCL researchers applied a higher range of wavelengths instead of the standard fibre optic ones. In order to increase the bandwidth, a boost of signal power and several different amplifier techniques were used.
By hearing it, one can assume the process is going to be expensive, but according to UCL, upgrading these amplifiers costs only the fraction of what it costs to install fibre optic cables.
In this global pandemic forcing many of us to work and socialise across the internet rather than face-to-face, so it brought a need of internet of faster speeds and greater bandwidth.
Dr Galdino said in a statement, “Independent of the COVID-19 crisis, internet traffic has increased exponentially over the last 10 years and this whole growth in data demand is related to the cost per bit going down. The development of new technologies is crucial to maintaining this trend towards lower costs while meeting future data rate demands that will continue to increase, with as yet unthought-of applications that will transform people’s lives.”
It is sad to hear that our country(India), is a way behind than the rest of the world, where countries like England, Australia, etc are doing research on the Fastest Internet Speed. We are still busy with bringing 4G in our country (like Andaman and Nicobar Islands Optical Fibre Connectivity for 4G). This project is really going to help people, when we say fast internet speed, most of us think about movies or web series. But for a second just think about students who faced a lot of problems during this pandemic, someone sold their cow for this or somebody just climbs a tree for internet connection. This pandemic has changed our life a lot. Hope this Pandemic end soon and we could go out without any fear and enjoy our life. Thanks for reading this article.
